COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are increasing in Northern Europe, where the colder weather is first being felt across the EU.
Belgium reported a 17 percent increase in new coronavirus cases in the week to September 19 from the previous week.
Denmark’s infectious disease institute reported the first data indicating a reversal in infection rates, stabilizing or rising slightly throughout the regions. People aged 70 to 89 remain the largest group among the newly admitted.
And in the U.K., the number of new cases in the week up to September 17 was 13 percent higher than the previous week.
Public health authorities have warned of increased cases during the cold season. Europe has authorized boosters targeting two Omicron variant types, and the U.K. has approved one new booster targeting the first Omicron strain.
