EU initiatives

We disseminate knowledge about the EU's political and legal initiatives to combat misinformation. Some of these initiatives only deal with one area, others are more varied due to the nature of the theme.
Not all activities have direct relevance to misinformation in general, but still have an impact on the theme. We present these where possible.
On-line platforms, the leading ones
social media, the advertising industry and advertisers have reached an agreement to combat the spread of misinformation and fake news. Each individual platform uses its own methods and publishes monthly reports on its activities in this area.

Misinformation is used by state and political actors for political and economic gain. By influencing the public debate through misinformation, targeted mistrust is created which affects the western democratic societies governed by the rule of law and their freedom of expression. This undermining of our society’s values is the goal pursued with misinformation.
